Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."

These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
