Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of characters, and a thrilling plot including angels, evil spirits, and dark forces expanding in power within the city.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The latest chapter finished on a dramatic pause and presented the first table of adventurers who will branch out from the central cast to embark on their own adventure, separate from the other two tables.

This warrior group includes the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), the agile character (the talented performer), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Considering 13 cast members, it was clear from the start that maintaining everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

This explains, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, weaving together the characters’ stories before dividing into three distinct groups: Warriors, Strategists, and Questers.

What Defines the Combat Party

As described by the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for adventurers who enjoy a classically intense fight-heavy narrative style where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Initially, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander might appear out of place, but the events of the third episode show why these five characters are ideally matched for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

First, the group has a clear idea where to head next after a intense opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose demise started the campaign’s events—manipulated the foes for his personal gain, entering the hidden lair, striking the rogue, and stealing all the enchanted items to dispose of.

Casimir then cleared his debts and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the city, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.

Individual Reasons

Additionally, each adventurer has a personal reason to exit the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, seeks retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the region and warns that it is a hostile location.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having defied his relatives’ demands to kill the target and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • But, their reputation as prominent individuals in the powerful family could enable the team enter places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The fighter swore a life debt to The cleric for his rescue and will now follow him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the authorities that govern Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The rogue and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and Wicander turned against the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
  • The target is marked for death by the family.

This results in them few options but to travel to the remote area in search of the traitor.

Future Episodes

Based on episode three’s post-show segment, we discover that the combat party won’t be around next week, leaving the other eight cast members to round up the Seekers and Schemers tables.

Audiences can expect discovering which players will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
