In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major blasts shaking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, without initially offer additional information.
Context: Rising Strains and Prior Events
The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased strains in the region. Key events preceding this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the region, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further discussions scheduled.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected assertions about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation is fast-moving, with further updates expected as events unfold.
