US Military Operation on Caracas Stokes Fears of Future Danish Territory Acquisition.

Recent US-led bombardment in Venezuela and the seizure of its president have renewed apprehension regarding Washington's designs on the Arctic territory. Followers of the former president's political movement have reportedly turned their attention to the resource-rich island following the events in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Official Backlash

Only hours following the commencement of the Venezuelan campaign, a well-known right-wing commentator, who is the spouse of a senior presidential aide, posted a symbolic image. The picture showed Greenland covered in the American flag, with the single-word caption: "COMING."

This overt suggestion to absorb the mineral-rich land, which is a member of the NATO alliance, provoked immediate and firm criticism from Danish officials.

"We are close allies and should keep cooperate as such. American security is also Greenland’s and Denmark’s security," stated the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "Our nation and the US work together to ensure security in the Arctic."

The ambassador additionally pointed out that Denmark had significantly increased its defence spending recently, earmarking a large sum expressly for Northern and North Atlantic defence. "Furthermore, we demand complete respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark," he emphasized.

Administrative Moves and Strategic Goals

The tensions were additionally complicated by the recent appointment of a Southern governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The governor had publicly thanked the president, stating it was an "honour" to work in a unpaid capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

After the military action in Venezuela, this envoy praised the president's actions, linking it to the wider "fight against narcotics."

Ever since assuming office, the American leader has consistently unnerved transatlantic allies with his expressed interest in Greenland. The territory is viewed as vitally important for national security and future mineral exploitation. It already houses the northernmost US military base.

Leaving the Door Open to Military Action

In a significant media interview, the leader declined to exclude the use of military force to acquire Greenland. This position comes amid growing great-power competition in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He characterized Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Growing Tensions and Local Resistance

In reaction to this constant "drumbeat" of threats, Denmark's security agency took the unprecedented step last month of classifying the United States as a "security risk."

The prime ministers of both Greenland delivered a joint and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Surveys in Greenland reveals a complex sentiment. While a overwhelming percentage of the territory's residents seek independence from Denmark, there is simultaneously scant desire to become part of the United States. The island has had the legal right to seek sovereignty for over a decade.

Analyst Assessment: A Credible Scenario?

Some experts are now re-evaluating the possibility of such a action. One thinktank analyst specializing in defence conceded she had previously dismissed the sabre-rattling but was "now not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to deploy a couple hundred or a few thousand troops on Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could intervene about it," she concluded.
